File Explorer in Windows 11 works mostly the same as in Windows 10, but there are visual and layout tweaks as well as new menus and locations for key commands. Those of you who upgrade to Windows 11 have to contend with a new and decidedly unimproved Start menu, a more limited Taskbar, and other changes that may leave you cold. Fortunately, File Explorer is one feature that survived the move to Windows 11 without major damage.

Instead of crippling the functionality of File Explorer, Microsoft actually enhanced it in certain ways. The feature has a new look and layout that give it some pizzazz.

The ribbon has been jettisoned. Several key menus and commands have been relocated or condensed. So how does the Windows 11 File Explorer compare with its Windows 10 counterpart? The square corners have been replaced by rounded corners as part of the new Windows 11 aesthetic.

Depending on your Windows color scheme, the overall tone is softer. The most obvious difference lies with the folder icons. Instead of the generic yellow icons, the built-in default folders sport different colors with embedded images representing the various functions. So the Downloads folder is green with a down arrow on it. The Music folder is reddish-brown with a musical note on it. And the Videos folder is purple with a play button on it.

In addition to being more colorful and compact, the new icons look sleeker Figure 1. Figure 1. The core folders in Windows 11 get a paint job with different colors and embedded images. Drill down to the subfolders, and those still use the same generic folder icons. But as in Windows 10, you can tweak the look and imagery of any folder icon through the Customize area of the Properties window. Look around further. Another significant change is the new and more compact command bar, which replaces the bigger and bulkier ribbon in Windows On the plus side, the smaller command bar leaves more room to view your folders and files.

But there are a few downsides. One drawback is that most of the icons have no labels. Experienced Windows users will be able to identify Cut, Copy, Paste, and other commands right off the bat. Newbies will have to get used to the nameless icons. The other core commands include Rename, Share, and Delete. After you select a subfolder or file, most of the commands become available, allowing you to cut or copy and then paste an item, rename it, share it, or delete it.

See Figure 2. Figure 2. Select a subfolder or file, and the command bar activates commands for cut, copy, paste, rename, share, and delete. Select or open just about any folder, and the New menu becomes available. But they could do with adding two sub-menus to the context menu. All the 3rd party context menu crap and rarely used legacy crap from Windows 10 and older can live there.

Adding a sub-context menu for file operations is not the worst option, but there was a certain elegance to just having basic file operations be the menu, as it originally was, instead of allow apps to clutter up the menu, then save us from the clutter while changing the purpose of the menu so that file operations is a secondary thing now. Because TC has many options and shortcut keys, it was never close; TC won every time by a significant margin.

Fuck you. How slow. I am having to go to VS Code for file and folder manipulation! Windows 11 sound like a nightmare. Everything from Explorer, to the taskbar and Start Menu. I will be blocking this update until they iron this crap out! Who ever thought any of changes in Windows 11 is okay, needs to be fired. This is seriously a accessibility disaster. Icons only for many things, where is the text labels option?

Moved to Linux. Tried it periodically since the days of XP, but Linux has finally matured to the point of usability, and Windows has been downhill since 7. If I could use Win 7 forever, I would. It was the peak of Windows design and functionality. Microsoft is just making everything flashy for OEMs to market their products.

Agreed, however, Linux needs to get away from being so dependent of the command line to so many of the basic functions such as installing new programs, then not seeing an Icon on the desktop to actually run the new program.

I say this looking at it from the perspective of people that are not familiar with Linux. The masses who are possibly want to make the switch to Linux will find this confusing and a deal breaker. Linux is still a niche OS for users that are savvy with using CLI for allot of the power user functions.

I feel that until this area alone is easier for the everyday Windows user, Linux will not be accepted as a simple alternative. I wonder when less convenience and more wasted time became benefits. Your work is greatly appreciated! Make way, HOT garbage coming through.

Microsoft published a detailed article about these changes some time ago. Installers just need to be updated, the options will then be in the menu, albeit in a much more organized fashion. Screenshots ofnthe menu after appsnhwbe updated their installers look great. Current menus are a mess. Very excited for this change. I actually like it — simple from the start. There are enough even free alternatives available. I like to right click on a folder and press r open folder or file properties quickly.

None of that works! It sucks. Explorer is now glitching my new machine too. It lags and freezes. Why is this so hard for MS to fix? Specifically regarding the right click context menu. But note also that the items on the new menu are only keyboard accessible using arrow keys, whereas formerly one could type the first letter or the underlined letter.

Now, it must be told, that 3rd party junk was cluttering up that menu, which often was difficult or impossible to remove unless you download an application to clean it up for you. That handy Move to OneDrive feature for example, which liked M to be the shortcut even though M was for long the shortcut to Rename. This washes the hands of that problem, because now only the extreme power users are wanting to use the classic context menu.

There is another problem with the repeating of the arrow keys, notice how there are two pauses instead of one pause, before the arrow key rapidly repeats. Try that in notepad and you can see that this new double pause only affects the arrow key in windows explorer, fortunately, the two registry hacks have solved all of this.

I am a power user I guess, it seems like the world left me behind, windows explorer stopped liking me long ago when you first had to unhide extensions for common file types, and then we stopped opening to the local file system because that all went under This PC, and like whoa people really dont mind the extra clicks to get there?

I guess not. How few people understand someone such as myself. I also use Classic Shell in 95 mode, with fully customizable hierarchical keyboard accessible folders and desktop shortcuts which support command line arguments.

I am back up and running with no terrible outrages against windows 11, after only 20 minutes or so, that is pretty good. Either re-open the registry editor, or use the F5 key to reload everything with the new changes this step is important.

Click on the following key, which should still be viewable in your Registry editor window from the last step. Double-click LocalizedString in the right-hand pane and type the following data to rename the icon. Add a subkey and name it as Properties, then select the Properties key, double-click the default value and type the following:. Under Properties, create a subkey and name it as Command, and then set its default value as follows:. Press F5 to refresh the Desktop, and here is how the Internet Explorer icon would look like, finally.

It only took 24 steps, but you made it through to the end—of course, you could just download the registry hack and get the icon back with a double-click. The carbon dating on the vellum is 16th 15th century and many believe it was written around the same time. During this period the new world was just discovered and the rediscovery of ancient knowledge was starting the renaissance. Many forget that some of our most important historical texts come from singular copies that were found and preserved during this exact time period; Cicero, Lucretius, Tacitus. Also new world expeditions were doing crazy fundraising during this same period, and peoples imaginations were running wild with what was there to be found in the ancient texts and in the new world.

It feels like a cursive stroke that is fun, but also, routine. So much so that it is almost desirable to write, but with speed and little thought to the purpose.

I agree it feels Islamic, but has a structure of Latin imo. As if the opening paragraph is a question or assertion that would be well known at the time.

Several of the characters look different, but feel similar. A couple glasses of wine and they'd be the same; though the sharp changes in the stroke vs smooth changes, make me feel like these are not the same the characters. Additionally, this "feels" like a scientific log book.

Strikingly, the root system of each plant is focused; the upper portions of the plants seem surreal. I see a young person doing this who is learning, but bored at times. Not artistic, but observant. Dear Intellectuals of light bearing science, Today I am honored to inform you that the Voynich Manuscript has been finally deciphered. To date, scientists, historians, mathematicians and linguists have struggled to decipher the manuscript. However, the mystery has finally been put to rest. Currently, a formal paper of the philological study was submitted to an academic journal in John Hopkins University. I will translate this one in English as soon as possible.
