I think that it was the story of Corpse Party that really made this game click with me. I love Japanese horror movies that have been brought over to the west. The Ring, The Grudge and so on have always resonated with me and there is always something extra creepy about scary kids! The story of Corpse Party is that a group of school friends decides that they are going to do this ritual which will bind them together forever.
It is rather sweet when you think about it. Of course, things go wrong and after an earthquake, they awaken in a messed up alternate reality inside a school where some serious stuff has gone down. There are spirits and evil children that want you dead and unless you find out what happened here, how certain characters died and who you really are. All of it little vignettes overlay together brilliantly to make an excellent book of computerized phantom stories.
