Media scanning, while improved, still leaves a lot to be desired. OSX Pre Snow Leopard versions do not exist you cannot take an old Mac and make it an htpc. I've tried to hand 9 over to the family for years. Navigation is poor compared to 8, skins changed with the advent of 9. If you want to complicate your life, Plex is a great step forward. I also like how the media server and playback client functions have been separated into two discrete applications. I just spent the afternoon trying the latest version. Initially I was enthused enough to start wrestling with it It's regular expression access to identifying files is rather limited. I was able to improve on that a bit by hacking it. That I had to do so was a minus. And it's lost access to NetFlix and other online entertainment even though it claims the plugins are live and running.
More people at the support forums are facing this issue and response from developers has been nil so far. In the area of file hierarchy, there was no way I was going to start messing with my iTunes file system because it couldn't recognize there was more than one album in more than one subdirectory Same problem existed in its native acess as well as the alternative iTunes plugin though the plugin did a tiny bit better.
But that's not enough. And as time has passed, looking back and Plex's history and changes, it has had a long struggle trying to keep up. In part, there's some development paradigm problems that are holding it back, and some of those should be evident by comments herein.
